I do have to admit that I'm very proud of how this turned out and this is by far my favorite thing I've made with my Cricut! That being said, I will probably never do a water shaker again, LOL! Making the water shaker was so frustrating as every time I made it, it leaked from somewhere. On my fourth try I finally got it and I'm glad it worked! I did draw all of these images on ProCreate on my iPad and uploaded to Design Space. See below how I made this Cake Topper.

First let's make the water shaker.

What You Will Need:

  • Freezer Ziploc bag - quart size

  • Nail polish remover and cotton ball

  • Cricut small heat press or iron on a low heat setting

  • Water

  • Glitter of your choosing (I used from Michaels, see pic to the right)

  • Parchment paper

  • Circle template

  • Heat pad (I used a pot holder)

  • Scissors

Instructions:

Everything I read about these said to use paper pockets that you would use to put in binders, but I found those to be way too thin and every time I sealed it with the heat press it burned through so easily. I tried using a freezer Ziploc bag and it worked SO much better.

  1. You will want to remove the white Ziploc logo from the bag. To do that, you will use a cotton ball and dip it in the nail polish remover and rub it all over the logo and it will come so easily.

  2. Now that the logo is gone you can now cut the shape you wish to make. For mine I did a circle. I cut out a circle with my Cricut but you don't have to do that, you can trace anything you need to. I left a little room on the outside of the circle so there was enough margin to melt the plastic.

  3. Cut out your outline so you now have two pieces of the bag that we will now melt together.

  4. Grab the pot holder, parchment paper, and heatpress/iron as we will now melt the plastic together making sure to keep an opening at the top to add the water and glitter.

  5. It is kind of hard to see in the picture to left but I folded a small piece of parchment paper in half put the two pieces of the bag in the fold so there is parchment paper on the bottom and the top of the bag. Take your heatpress/iron and put it on the parchment paper and hold for 2-3 seconds, melting the bag. you don't want to do it for too long or it will melt a hole in the bag and water will obviously spill out. You want the plastic to look crinkled, that means it's melted together. Here is a picture of what NOT to do! I made a hold in the plastic by holding it on too long. But you do want it to look like the crinkled part above the hole.

  6. Continue doing this and move the parchment paper along your traced line and melt the plastic as you go. Again, make sure you leave an opening at the top.

  7. Add water and glitter to the opening. you do not need much water at all. It's hard to say how much to use because it all depends on what shape you are using and how big it is, but use your best judgement. I would suggest starting with a little and you can always add more once you see how the glitter moves around inside. Give it a second once the water is in to see if there are any leaks.

  8. Now that you have the water inside of it you will need to seal off the opening. To do so, you will melt the plastic the same way you did the rest of the bag but do it over the edge of a table or countertop so that the water does not spill out. See picture to the right.

  9. Move the bag around to check for leaks again. If there is, try to have patience as you will have to try again with another bag. I ended up trying 4 times because each time there was a leak. I tried to empty out the water and seal it again but once it's wet it will not melt right.

  10. If there are no leaks then you are all done! If you completed this on your first try then I applaud you, LOL! Because that was not my experience but I did love the end result. See my cake topper in action at my daughers birthday party!

As far as the rest of the cake topper, you can hot glue the frame around the cake topper **MAKING SURE NEVER TO GET HOT GLUE ON THE BAG, THIS WILL BURN A HOLE IN THE BAG AND LEAK EVERYWHERE. I feel like I need to put that in all caps because I did that and I don't want that to happen to you! Especially when you think you did it and your so proud of yourself and then you pop a hold in it! Ugh

See below as this cake topper has so many layers in it because the water shaker is so thick. I chose to not put cardstock behind water shaker so you can see through it, but it would be really pretty to also put a background behind it if you choose.
